Admissions
The admissions process for this joint program
is handled through the Graduate
Admissions Office of Rutgers University,
Camden Campus.
Applicants for admission to the DPT Program
should have earned a baccalaureate degree in
any field by the time of initial matriculation,
completed the Graduate Record Examination (general
test only), and complied with all prerequisite
requirements specified below. Applicants should
have a balanced liberal arts background prior
to applying to the Program.
An undergraduate grade point average (GPA)
of at least 3.0 and GRE scores of 500 or better
in each section of the general test is recommended
for application to the program. Applicants
should earn a B in all prerequisite courses.
Applicants should provide evidence of meeting
the PT experience requirement and address their
motivation for pursuit of a career in physical
therapy in a personal statement. If all requirements
for admission are met, applicants may be invited
to interview with Program faculty as part of
the admissions process.
The admissions process is competitive. The
credentials of accepted applicants generally
exceed the minimal requirements. Meeting the
minimal requirements does not guarantee admission.

Admissions Requirements
Applicants should self-manage their application
in order to insure that all materials are received.
- All applicants must have an earned
baccalaureate degree at the time of initial
matriculation.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Scores
Applicants should send their official GRE
report directly to Rutgers University Admissions
Office, Camden , Code 2092. Test scores sent
to other Rutgers campuses, or to UMDNJ campuses,
may not be forwarded to the Rutgers-Camden
Admissions Office thereby resulting in an
incomplete application.
Applicants should also submit a copy of their
student GRE report with their application
materials.
The GRE test must be taken within
five (5) years of the application date.

Applicants must complete and submit the Physical
Therapy Prerequisite Verification Form
(doc).
All prerequisite courses previously completed,
in progress, and/or anticipated to be completed
by initial matriculation must be documented
on this form.
We recommend that applicants include course
catalog descriptions for any courses which
they believe meet the prerequisite requirements
but which are not obvious in their course
titles. Students and their undergraduate advisors
should review the prerequisite descriptions
in order to insure compliance with the requirements.
All required science courses must
be at a science major or pre-medicine level
with a laboratory component. Introductory
courses for non-majors are not acceptable.
Students who have not completed at least
9 prerequisite courses at the time of
application must postpone applying to the
program until the following year.
A maximum of four (4) prerequisite courses,
including a maximum of two (2) science prerequisites
may be either in progress at the time of application
or to be completed in the spring semester
immediately preceding admission.
All incomplete prerequisites must be
documented on the Physical
Therapy Prerequisite Verification Form
(doc).
Biological Sciences:
One (1) course in biology with a laboratory
component at a science major or pre-medicine
level is required.
Examples of biology courses which are acceptable
include: general biology I & II, cell
biology, comparative anatomy, physiology,
embryology, genetics, histology, microbiology,
pharmacology, vertebrate zoology. Examples
of courses not acceptable include botany and
invertebrate zoology.
Human Anatomy and Physiology:
Two (2) courses in human anatomy and physiology
with laboratory components at a science or
pre-medicine level are required. If the anatomy
and physiology requirement is met by a sole
semester of human anatomy, a sole semester
of human physiology is required.

Chemistry:
Two (2) courses in chemistry with laboratory
components at the science major or pre-medicine level
are required.
Examples of courses that are acceptable include:
general chemistry I & II, biochemistry,
organic or inorganic chemistry, pharmacology.
Introductory courses in chemistry for non-majors
are not acceptable.
Physics:
Two (2) courses in physics with laboratory
components at the science major or pre-medicine
level are required.
Courses must include concepts of mechanics,
sound, light, heat, and electricity.
Introductory courses in physics and physics
for non-majors are not acceptable.
Statistics:
One (1) course is required.
Course should be taken in mathematics, behavioral
science or education departments.
Contents should include descriptive statistics,
probability estimation and tests of hypotheses.
A course that includes computer statistical
analysis is recommended.

Sociology and Psychology and
the Humanities:
Students should have a broad base in the
humanities, social, and behavioral sciences.
A minimum of four (4) lecture courses are
required. Each course should generally be
equivalent to 3 semester hours of credit.
Examples of courses include general psychology,
sociology, abnormal psychology, human growth
and development, child psychology, educational psychology,
cognitive psychology, physiological psychology,
organizational behavior, sociology of the
child, adolescent, or family, urban sociology,
English, economics, history, arts, interdisciplinary
studies, literature, philosophy, political
science, religion, theology, speech, and theater.
English Composition and Writing:
One (1) course that emphasizes English composition
or written communication is required.
Writing intensive curricula will be considered
in lieu of this requirement if adequate information
regarding the writing requirements is provided
with the application materials.

- Advanced Placement Courses; Transfer
and Non-matriculated Students
Advanced placement courses and CLEP credits
are not accepted in lieu of prerequisite course
requirements.
We do not waive any of the prerequisite courses
or PT Program courses.
The program does not generally accept transfer
students.
Non-matriculated students are only accepted
for the Neuroscience course based on
space availability and at the discretion of
the course instructor and program director.
Applicants are required to submit a brief
(maximum of 2 pages) typed narrative about
yourself and your interest in physical therapy
addressing the following items:
What are your reasons for applying to the
PT Program jointly sponsored by Rutgers-Camden
and UMDNJ?
Why have you chosen physical therapy as a
profession?
Discuss your skills, strengths, and weaknesses.
Describe your plans for a career in physical
therapy.
Discuss personal values, knowledge of physical
therapy and healthcare, and professional and
community experiences that have influenced
your decision to be a physical therapist.
Discuss any participation in extracurricular,
team work, and/or community service activities.
- Physical Therapy Experience
Applicants are expected to have exposure
to at least two distinct areas of physical
therapy practice through volunteer and/or
work experience.
This information should be typed on a sheet
of paper and titled Physical Therapy Experience
and submitted with all application materials
. It should include the name of the
facility, supervisor's name and phone number,
type of facility, number of hours of experience,
and responsibilities.

- Letters of Recommendation
Applicants are required to submit three (3)
letters of recommendation with their application
materials. Letters of recommendation may now
be submitted online by the recommenders as
part of the application

Applicants may submit hard copies of reference
letters; however, electronic submission is
encouraged. Click

Admissions Recommendation form. If selecting
this option, the letters should be placed
in sealed envelopes that have been signed
across the seal by the individuals recommending
the applicant and be sent to the DPT Program
along with the other supporting materials

Letters of recommendation should be from
individuals who are qualified to evaluate
your academic and professional qualifications.
At least one letter should be from a licensed
physical therapist who can speak about the
applicant's knowledge of physical therapy,
motivation for pursuing PT as a career, initiative,
and interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
At least one letter is required from a college
professor who is familiar with the applicant's
academic achievements and can address potential
for rigorous graduate study.
Personal letters of recommendation do not
meet the reference requirement.

Applicants should submit a current curriculum
vitae or resume to the DPT Program along with
their supporting documents.
Foreign applicants are required to take the
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
if English is not their native language. Satisfactory
English proficiency is a prerequisite for
graduate study. A minimal score of 575
on the written examination, 233 on the computer-based
examination, or 90 - 91 on the internet version

Nonimmigrant applicants must present evidence
of adequate financial resources. The University
may deny admission to nonimmigrant students
for lack of English proficiency, lack of financial
support, or because of improper visa status.
Applications from foreign applicants must
be received by February 1st.
Transcripts of all course work must include
English translations of course titles and
credit conversion to the American system.
A course-by-course report is required.
